Our Story

Hope City Presbyterian – East-City is a new, Gospel-centered church plant that will serve Cape Town’s eastern city neighbourhoods of Woodstock, Salt River, and Observatory.

We want to plant a church that loves the culture of the city and seeks its peace and prosperity pointing people to their unfelt need for redemption – the redemption of their souls. The only way to do this is to proclaim and live out the Gospel in this place faithfully.

Many tell the tale of a neighbourhood that once was vibrant with culture and a strong sense of community. Over time this neighbourhood saw decay and became an unattractive one. In recent years, because of its proximity to the main city centre, the neighbourhood has won the interest of many seeking to redeem and restore it. While buildings are being restored and new businesses are being launched, the people who have been calling this place home for decades have been forgotten and overlooked.

We believe that God is calling us to plant a church community here that will be a faithful Gospel presence to serve all the people of Woodstock, Salt River, and Observatory.

Hope City Presbyterian (East-City) is led by Wesley Marshall with the support of, and under the supervision of his sending church, Hope City Presbyterian (CBD), where he currently serves as a church planting resident.

Wesley holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Ministry (BMin). He is a participant in the Cape Town cohort of the Redeemer City to City church planting incubator and is undergoing assessment with Acts 29.

Wesley and Nicole are Cape Town locals who share a deep love for the
neighbourhood that they feel God is calling them to serve through church planting.
